Presentation

The Maison Poulalion in Frontignan is an emblematic building from the late 19th century, recognizable by its oriental style and crenellated towers reminiscent of minarets. It was the brainchild of Séverin Marius Auguste Poulalion, a Frontignan doctor born in Frontignan in 1861, who wanted to create a sanatorium or "health palace" for his clientele, particularly those from Paris. The project, ambitious and highly innovative for its time, was never completed, but it did leave behind a singular edifice, at the crossroads of local history, architecture and a taste for Orientalism.

The history of the building is also that of an interrupted dream. Built in 1898, the house was intended to combine comfort, hygiene and modernity, with remarkable features for its time, such as a wind turbine to supply water to the upper floors. However, stability problems and Dr. Poulalion?s financial difficulties led to the project being abandoned, and the house sold in 1910. The building subsequently underwent a number of transformations, from nursing home to boarding house to condominium, while retaining its strong architectural identity.

Today, the Maison Poulalion is one of Frontignan?s most original heritage sites, both for its "white castle" appearance and for its human history.
